"Books are the carriers of civilization. Without books history is silent, literature dumb, science crippled, thought and speculation at a standstill."--Barabara W. Tuchman
A Little History

The Writing Loft was founded in 1995 with the long term vision of connecting talented writers who have marketable work with agents and publishers who desire a larger, more diverse talent pool.

Nora Profit, an award winning journalist, founded The Writing Loft after determining that the current approach to writer education often left out the practical side of the craft.  She believed anyone could learn to write, write well and get published.  She set out to prove this by designing and implementing a set of online courses to guide writers through their individual creative processes while teaching a combination of writing fundamentals and public relations.  Today, The Writing Loft’s Online Program serves as a portal to excellent writing for writers all over the world.

In 2000 Nora expanded The Writing Loft to include the Private Student Program, a one-on-one mentorship program that concentrated primarily on the craft of writing.  Private instruction continues today for both new and experienced writers working toward publication.  The writer is given individual and personalized instruction on his or her own project with private critiquing sessions and in-depth training on style, grammar, voice and structure that is completely dependent on the writer’s unique needs.  The program’s success is directly correlated to the dedication The Writing Loft has to its writers.  We believe in our writer’s personal projects and we know their market capabilities.

It wasn’t too long before Nora realized it was time to get the word out about what was happening at The Writing Loft.  Clearly she was on to something and she knew agents and independent publishers would want to know about it.  The time was right.

The Writing Loft’s vision was realized in 2010 with the conception--and implementation--of the Purple Pen program.  For the first time, those writers whose projects were market–ready could be directly connected to agents and independent publishers.

From the beginning The Writing Loft has been a place known for its practical approach to skill and craft.  The Writing Loft offers a new kind of writer education program, one in which writers are schooled not just in the art of the written word, but in how to research and understand the marketplace for which they write.

We accept writers who are dedicated to their work, display a creative curiosity and are open to learning the complexities of the craft.   Likewise, we always welcome new partnerships with progressive literary agencies and publishers interested in receiving manuscripts that are market ready from writers who are committed to their craft.
